A million mad, mindless machines
Roar through the pale rose light of dawn.
Uncaring, crying wheels careen
To somewhere (or, at least, go on).
A million men hunch down, peter
out, peer at phones with sightless eyes
Seeking, endless, from the feeder
Compulsive, comfortable surprise.
A million mothers, half awake
Pull every lonely kid to school.
Someday the whole machine will break!
It hums, for now, as it unspools.
